The Cluster Sofia Knowledge City will take a part in a meeting on the future of European cities

The Cluster Sofia Knowledge City will participate in a meeting - discussion between representatives of European cities, including Sofia, Cluj, Paris, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Hamburg, Reggio Emilia Romagna, and others, to discuss the challenges of developing a future European city. The meeting will be held on September 24-25, 2019 in Brussels. Prof. Rumen Nikolov, who is Deputy Chairman of the Board, will participate in the discussion on behalf of the Cluster Sofia Knowledge City of Knowledge.

The meeting is part of the City Science Initiative, which provides an opportunity for cities, urban networks, experts and European Commission services to strengthen their cooperation and the link between science and policy. In 2020, this initiative group team will work on the opportunity, through research and innovation and the Horizon Europe funding, to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular to make the European City an inclusive, safe and sustainable place for life.

The starting point of the discussion will be the Future Cities report (see the report Future Cities) prepared by a high-level expert group on innovative cities. The report is an initiative of the Joint Research Center (JRC), the European Commission's Office for Science and Knowledge (EC) and is supported by the Commission's Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO). It focuses on the need for a fundamental rethinking of the structure and functioning of the current economic system, such as the city and the search for another model of growth that guarantees the realization of the fourth industrial revolution in a human way through well-designed and realized digitalization. Highlights and comments regarding this report will be presented by the special guest of the meeting, Charles Landry, Chair of the Expert Group.

The meeting will also discuss the expectations for the new Commission Research Program and the Horizon Europe Program in terms of city science.
